Some older iPhone models have a SIM lock – a use of your iPhone is not so with SIM cards from other operators. In this article, we explain how you can unlock your iPhone with iTunes software.
Do you have your iPhone purchased subsidized by a network operator, then it could be provided with a SIM lock. This lock prevents you from using the iPhone with SIM cards from other operators. Only the network operator, with its SIM card you have purchased the iPhone, can cancel the SIM lock. We explain below how we must do it at the moment.
Which network operators offer unlocking?
The iPhone can be unlocked at your network operator – where you have purchased your iPhone including mobile phone contract. However, only older devices are affected, since both Telekom and Vodafone deliver all current iPhone models without SIM lock. First, please contact your provider. Then you have to unlock your iPhone as described below.
iPhone with original SIM card unlock
If the original SIM card is still in your possession, unlock your iPhone via iTunes. This requires that you have installed the latest version of iTunes on your Windows PC or Mac. You also need an Internet connection.
1. Open iTunes first and then connect the iPhone via USB cable to the PC. A small symbol in the upper left corner indicates that the device has been detected.
2. The individual tabs determine which media you want to synchronize. You can select all data, or select only a selective sync.
3. To start the synchronization, click on the “Apply” button in the lower right corner. You can see the storage space at the bottom of the screen.
4. In the “Overview” tab, you specify how you want to synchronize in the “Options.” If you click on “Synchronize” on this tab, you save all the data you have previously selected.
Your SIM lock is now unlocked, and you can use SIM cards from other network operators.
If you downloaded iTunes on your computer, open the software. Then connect your iOS device to the PC via USB cable and wait for iTunes to recognize the device. A small icon in the upper left corner will show you when the device is detected.

iPhone without SIM card or SIM card from another network operator
If the original SIM card is not available, unlock your iPhone without a SIM card or with a SIM from any network operator. You also need the latest version of iTunes and an internet connection for this version. That’s how it’s done:
Start iTunes and then connect your iPhone via Lightning cable to a USB port on your computer.
Then create a backup for your iPhone.
When the backup is complete, your iPhone will reset to factory defaults.
Restores your iPhone with the built-in backup.
Possible error message when unlocking
If you see the following error message in iTunes or on your iPhone, your iPhone has not been unlocked.
“The SIM card inserted into the iPhone is not supported. The iPhone can only be activated via compatible SIM cards from a supported mobile phone provider. Insert the SIM card provided with the iPhone or search for the branch of a supported network operator.”
In this case, please contact your network operator. Only he can check whether the lock in the system has been lifted.
